SilverDragon - Rare Scanner
SilverDragon
SilverDragon tracks rares in World of Warcraft. It will try everything possible to notice them and tell you about them.
How does it search?
Vignettes
Those little skull icons you see on the minimap. If one of them is a rare SilverDragon knows about, it'll yell at you.
Targets
If you mouse over or target a rare mob, SilverDragon will notice it.
Nameplates
If you have enemy nameplates turned on, SilverDragon will keep an eye on them to look for the names of known rares.
Macro
SilverDragon can also create a macro to target any rares that are known in the current zone. You can stick this on your actionbars as a button to spam while chasing after a rare, or bind it to a key. This is sort of a last resort.
Chat
Some rares yell in zone chat. If SilverDragon notices those yells, it'll alert you.
Dark Magic
This abuses detection of when Blizzard blocks attempts to call a protected function (TargetUnit
) to work out when you're in targetting range of a unit with a given name
This inherently causes in-game errors, so it is disabled by default. Enable in the addon config under Scanning / Dark Magic
.
By default it's less-aggressive, scanning through rares in the zone without known vignettes at a rate of 1/second. However, you can turn that rate way up if you'd like. You can also turn on an option to automatically hide the error messages it causes, but beware that this will potentially cause taint issues that'll leave you needing to /reload
eventually.
How will I know when a rare is seen?
Frame
When a rare appears, SilverDragon will pop up a frame that you can click on to target it.
Warning: If you're in combat, secure action restrictions mean that it won't show up until combat finishes.
Sounds
You can choose from assorted sounds to play when a rare is seen. The sound can loop for a while, to make sure you don't miss it.
There's special settings for rares that drop mounts and world boss rares which you might want to call up a group for. If you're sitting mostly-AFK on a Time-Lost Proto Drake spawn, you probably want the sound that plays to be utterly ridiculous and go on for a good long while, to make sure you don't miss that sucker.
Messages
A notice can be sent to a number of places:
- your scrolling combat text
- your chat frame
- a channel in your chat frame (announcing it to your party, for instance)
- a popup window
- etc
History
A log of seen rares will be shown in a window, so you can easily glance over spawn times.
Other useful things?
Custom mobs
In SilverDragon's options you'll find a "Mobs" section. In the "Always" section, you can add any mob you want to be scanned for. All you need to know is the mob id.
So, let's say you wanted to keep an eye out for Lil Timmy in Stormwind, to buy the kitten he sells. You would...
- Go to his wowhead page.
- Grab his id from the URL. It's
8666
. - Enter
8666
into the "add" field, and click "okay". - Play with your new kitten.
Yes, this example dates me.
Ignoring mobs
If there's some mob you don't want to hear about for whatever reason, just go to the "Ignore" section of the options. Again, enter the mob's id into the "add" box, then click okay. Bam! You will never again be told that Vern is up.
(Actually, Vern is ignored by default. But you get the idea.)
Alternately, right-click the close button for the popup and that'll ignore it as well.
Syncs
SilverDragon will talk to itself. It can communicate with other copies of itself run by people in your party / guild, and tell you when they see a rare mob. (If there's a group of you camping all the Time-Lost Proto Drake spawns, say...)
You can turn this off completely, if you want to be private about it.
Tooltips
Some rares are part of an achievement. When you mouse over a rare mob, SilverDragon will add to the tooltip whether you've already killed it, so you know whether you need to rush for it.
Broker
SilverDragon includes a Broker plugin. It'll attach itself to the addon compartment and also your minimap, or a Broker container you have installed, and show you a list of the mobs it knows about in the current zone.
Other addons you may find useful
- AppearanceTooltip: integrates with the SilverDragon loot popups and shows transmog-known status.
- ServerRestartSound: plays a sound when the server's about to restart. If you're AFK-camping for a rare spawn, you probably want to know about this.
- ObjectScanner: A few rares are hidden away behind interacting with world-objects like the Edge of Reality. These have to be localized individually, so you need to work out what they're called in your language and set up a watch for tooltips mentioning them. This addon does that bit.
- ButtonBin: a broker display. SilverDragon's minimap icon will show up on it (or any other addon like it) instead of cluttering up your minimap, if you have it installed.
Why would you set the range ring in the minimap to "show" by default? Gah!
I feel the same way. After going through all of my addons, disabling them one at a time, I finally found out which one it was. I guess they could have disabled it by default, but then no one would know about it. I just wish there was a better way of figuring out which addon is causing the problems.
I just did the same thing. I dont need to see a ring. Please set the default ring option to off. =P
It's a basic tenent of UI design; if you add a feature, do not enable it by default unless it's non-obtrusive. The stupid range ring is obtrusive. In fact, it's intrusive. You can advertise it's existance but don't make it display on default. Trust me when I say that if I were to enable all of the new things I add into my addons, people would freak out. All I can do it document what I've done and hope people read it. Anyway, I've disabled SilverDragon and am actually looking at _NPCScan now.
@devlinv1
It'll only target things if you're within targeting range. It's not uncommon to wind up out of range due to the mob moving, or you moving before clicking the targeting frame.
I could adjust the macro to do `/target [nodead] Name` which would stop it targeting dead mobs. I do find it useful, though... lets me know I've actually found the mob, even if someone else got it first.
Hello! I have a question and I'm so sorry if I missed the answer somewhere in your description (which, by the way, is the most detailed and helpful on Curse, thank you). Referring to the pop-up window when you are within targeting range of a mob, the window you can click on to target, does it sometimes not work? Or maybe, as is in my case, not work at all? I just downloaded this add on yesterday, so I'm still learning all the ins and outs of it, but it won't target anything when I click or right-click. It also targets dead mobs, is it supposed to do that? Thank you for your time and the wonderful add on.
I put the addon into the addon pack of WoW directory, but it does not show up on the addons menu of the chrarcter selection screen. Why does it never say how to install?
Fruit -
Did you unzip it? (If not, unzip it to a file on your desktop then put that file into the addon folder)
I know it sounds like a silly question, but it happens. Frankly, if you're not great at add-ons, it would be faster and easier to install Curse Client (the free version - warts and all) and let it do the heavy lifting. You can uninstall the client afters, if that's your choice. I use it, and I have for years. Support for it sucks, but if it acts up, reinstalling almost always does the trick.
Good luck.
Is there a way to have TomTom crazy arrow point to where the target is. So many times I get the popup but can't seem to locate the target.
I don't like that it picks up on every single rare pet hunters have..
Anyway to make it not do that? Like a check for hostile target or something?
There is an setting in the Options to enable scanning to ignore Hunter pets. The reason it isn't checked by default is that it consumes a bit of CPU (not much though, tbh).
NPCScan uses the same method, theirs is just checked by default instead of unchecked by default.
Mine goes off even with the option selected. It's quite annoying.
So do mine, so it doesnt seem to work when checked.
Is there any chance you could explain the rare list of Silverdragon. The Timeless Isle list for example it doesn't have all the Timeless rare even after clearing and importing all rare mobs. After clearing all rare mobs and NOT importing their still a few mobs on the rare list.
What does the list actually do since I have 0 mobs imported at times yet it triggers when rares are found in cache?
I think I'm missunderstanding the rare list in Silverdragon it doesn't seem to be the same thing as the list in NPC scan which shows what rares the addon is scanning for?
Thanks
Hi,
the following thing is happening to me: the popup frame is very inconsistent and only shows up about 10% of the time an npc is found, if it wouldn't show up at all, I'd know that I made a mistake somewhere, or there might be a confilict with other addons I use, but in this case I'm left a bit dazzled. Played around with all the settings, clean install and so on an so forth, nothing helped.
On another note: is it possible to output a chat message once an npc is found? For those AFK flights it'd be pretty useful.
Hope anyone out there can enlighten me as to how to deal with this.
Thanks in advance,
neph
Edit: I figured out what is causing it; whenever a rare is found via vignette it doesn't show the popup frame, when it's via cache it still does. Problem is: I deactivated scanning via vignettes, but I still "find" npcs via vignettes, without my precious popup frame.
Edit2: Got rid of it by deleting the vignettes.lua within the SilverDragon/Scan Folder. Hope this helpes anyone who experiences the same inconvenience.
HI, very helpfully addon!
I deleted a rare from the Timeless Isle list....
How can i bring it back on the list without loosing all killcounts?
Just reimport the data. It won't overwrite the counts.
ok thx!
Only the count from the deleted rare is missing. :-)
Hi. Loving the addon but struggling with the amount of spam I send to the public channel. Tried looking through the options on Interface to switch the announcing off but nothing worked. Any suggestions? Is it possible to switch this off at all?
Thanks in advance.
Pix
Well, it doesn't output anything publicly by default (unless there's a bug in LibSink, I suppose), but you can disable absolutely everything like that by going to the options > outputs > messages, and unchecking "enabled".
