PitBull Unit Frames 4.0

318 - Individual Bar dimentions(Hight/width)

What is the enhancement in mind? How should it look and feel?

I would like to be able to change the width and hight for the bars, instead of it beeing 100% of the unitframes width/hight values.

Please provide any additional information below.

If i were able to set the hight and width for every frame individually it would give me a whole lot new ways to customize my unit frames, this is one of the few things that in my opinion is missing.

Ok thanks, this is helpful. I'll see what I can do about this stuff at some point. Can't say when I'll get to it though.

Well to explain what I mean, in a way that might make it clearer. When configuring bars you set their dimensions in relation to the frame dimensions and to the other bars of the same alignment. So if I have a frame of a certain dimension and say three horizontal bars in this frame and make two of them 3 in thickness and the third 1, the third bar will be a third as think as the other two bars, and actual size will be in relation to the entire frames size. This is fine for most things, but say I want a vertical bar in this same frame along with the horizontal bars and I want this vertical bar to be very very thin say about a millimeter. Had it been a horizontal bar this would have been done by simply setting it's thickness to 1 and increasing the thickness of the other bars until it was properly thin. Since it is a vertical bar though, and it's alone, even if I set it's thickness to 1 it is still pretty wide since it is in relation to the entire frame width, sure I can make it thin by adding another vertical blank bar and increasing the blank bars thickness to something big which will shrink this bar. This however leaves me with a big blank bar taking up space in the frame which is no better, since the reason I wanted it thin is to save space. So essentially the minimum thickness (1) of a single bar in a frame is too big for my purposes. If it could be set to say 0.1 (and thereby be only a tenth of the thickness of the present 1-size) then it would probably be fine, but 1 is the smallest setting at this time.

Now as you say I have no idea how this would be implemented. Enabling the fractional size could be one way. Another might be to enable making non-visible bars (not blank spaces, the non-visible bars take up no space and exist purely for the purpose of the other bars sizing options) that don't affect the layout other than in the size of other bars of the same alignment. A third option would be to somehow enable the setting of an actual bar size, in the way that we can say a frame might be 150x300, we could set a bar to have actual dimensions instead of in relation to other bars and the frame (this would probably be the most difficult way, but from what I understand is what the original author of the ticket is suggesting, which would work for my purposes as well).

Could you explain what you want to do that you can't do now.  Don't concentrate on how to implement it so much as just explaining something you'd like to do.

I'm really unclear as to what you really want to do that you can't do here.  If you want to leave space for other addons that you want to layer on top of the frame you can do that with a BlankSpace bar.  For vertical space set it the side to right or left.  For horizontal space set the side to center.

lellefot2, the width setting on vertical bars is a bit wonky.  This is largely because the horizontal bars together are treated as one vertical bar for the purposes of layout across that axis.  So they alter the spacing formulas to make them behave somewhat strangely.  Interestingly enough, it's works out nicely to the way most people want it.  We can probably do something about this behavior.  But I don't think this ticket is really asking for what you want.

Ultimately, there's only so much configuration that we can expose through a UI.  Some layouts just really aren't going to be reasonable to do with a setup like this.

I would also like to support this feature request. This can be especially useful if mixing vertical and horizontal bars within the same frame. Or as an alternative to setting an exact numerical value for the thickness of the bar, at least let us set a width in relation to a percentage of the frame or something like that. It is otherwise impossible to create say a very thin vertical bar at the edge of a wide frame filled with horizontal bars.
