SilverDragon - Rare Scanner
SilverDragon tracks rares. It will try everything possible to notice them and tell you about them.
How does it search?
Vignettes
Those little skull icons you see on the minimap. If one of them is a rare SilverDragon knows about, it'll yell at you.
Targets
If you mouse over or target a rare mob, SilverDragon will notice it.
Nameplates
If you have enemy nameplates turned on, SilverDragon will keep an eye on them to look for the names of known rares.
Macro
SilverDragon can also create a macro to target any rares that are known in the current zone. You can stick this on your actionbars as a button to spam while chasing after a rare, or bind it to a key. This is sort of a last resort.
How will I know when a rare is seen?
Frame
When a rare appears, SilverDragon will pop up a frame that you can click on to target it.
Warning: If you're in combat, secure action restrictions mean that it won't show up until combat finishes.
Sounds
You can choose from assorted sounds to play when a rare is seen. The sound can loop for a while, to make sure you don't miss it.
There's special settings for rares that drop mounts and world boss rares which you might want to call up a group for. If you're sitting mostly-AFK on a Time-Lost Proto Drake spawn, you probably want the sound that plays to be utterly ridiculous and go on for a good long while, to make sure you don't miss that sucker.
Messages
A notice can be sent to a number of places:
- your scrolling combat text
- your chat frame
- a channel in your chat frame (announcing it to your party, for instance)
- a popup window
- etc
Other useful things?
Custom mobs
In SilverDragon's options you'll find a "Mobs" section. In the "Always" section, you can add any mob you want to be scanned for. All you need to know is the mob id.
So, let's say you wanted to keep an eye out for Lil Timmy in Stormwind, to buy the kitten he sells. You would...
- Go to his wowhead page.
- Grab his id from the URL. It's
8666
. - Enter
8666
into the "add" field, and click "okay". - Play with your new kitten.
Yes, this example dates me.
Ignoring mobs
If there's some mob you don't want to hear about for whatever reason, just go to the "Ignore" section of the options. Again, enter the mob's id into the "add" box, then click okay. Bam! You will never again be told that Vern is up.
(Actually, Vern is ignored by default. But you get the idea.)
Syncs
SilverDragon will talk to itself. It can communicate with other copies of itself run by people in your party / guild, and tell you when they see a rare mob. (If there's a group of you camping all the Time-Lost Proto Drake spawns, say...)
You can turn this off completely, if you want to be private about it.
Tooltips
Some rares are part of an achievement. When you mouse over a rare mob, SilverDragon will add to the tooltip whether you've already killed it, so you know whether you need to rush for it.
Broker
SilverDragon includes a Broker plugin. It'll attach itself to your minimap, or a Broker container you have installed, and show you a list of the mobs it knows about in the current zone.
Other addons you may find useful
- AppearanceTooltip integrates with the SilverDragon loot popups and shows transmog-known status.
- ServerRestartSound: plays a sound when the server's about to restart. If you're AFK-camping for a rare spawn, you probably want to know about this.
- ObjectScanner: A few rares are hidden away behind interacting with world-objects like the Edge of Reality. These have to be localized individually, so you need to work out what they're called in your language and set up a watch for tooltips mentioning them. This addon does that bit.
- ButtonBin: a broker display. SilverDragon's minimap icon will show up on it (or any other addon like it) instead of cluttering up your minimap, if you have it installed.
Thanks for updating me! That's going to be a shared-libraries issue -- Rarity uses LibQTip for the fancy dropdowns just like I do, and they've not updated to the new version... and a quirk of how the library works means that the newer version I package can't replace the broken bits from the old version.
In reply to Kemayo:
I'm seeing an issue with the LibQTip.lua dealing with the SetBackround in line 540.
@Frazzld: Same as interloper69 -- some other addon hasn't updated and is breaking it.
So not sure what is going on, but was wondering if maybe you know what i can adjust. When a rare spawns with silver dragon, my game lags out and i get a black screen flash while using this addon. Any ideas?
Try disabling the "Flash" option in settings, maybe? I've never seen that happen, so it might be some weird interaction.
Question about the priority of the settings in the Output section:
Let’s say, there is a rare that drops a pet. I already have killed that rare and have the pet in my collection – but I wouldn’t mind getting another one. So, it’s clear that I select the “Got the loot” option. But what’s about “Already found”?
I would like to deselect “Already found”, to get rid of the announcements of all the minor, lootless rares I already killed. But will this then also exclude the pet-dropping rare?
In other words: Will an unselected “Already found” overwrite the selected “Got the loot”?
Thanks for clarification.

I like this plugin, it's great.
I encountered a problem, how do I hide the rare achievements (completed and uncompleted) of the achievements and task types? I am doing missions in the old world. The map display is too messy. I just want to show unfinished achievements, mounts, toys, and rarities that have not been obtained by pets. Thank you very much.
Hi, first I would like to say I really appreciate what you do here. Great work so far!
Now to my question/request - is it possible to implement option to hide Silver Dragon icons on minimap? I mean those displayed through handynotes plugin.
For me having them in normal map is enough and they sometimes completely cover my minimap so I can't see anything else.
Thanks in advance!
Sure, why not, it's in the next release. (Which Curse is being really slow about approving.)
In reply to Kemayo:
Thanks a lot!:)
I am getting the following error.
With only Bugsack and Silverdragon enabled.
I downloaded v80300.3.1 from Curse and WowInterface.
Same error using either one so it doesn't appear to be a bad download or upload.

Ooh, I think I changed the name of something and forgot to add a migration. New alpha version fixes that -- I've got one or two things to tweak, then I'll do another full release.
maybe I missed it but does this alert for chests as well? If not, can that be added?
It doesn't. In the past, the answer was no because there was no way to look for them. These days, the vignettes could do it. I'll consider it.
Hi, thanks for the update. I saw you added the right click to dismiss, which is great. But I'm also seeing more rares showing now and I was confused. It seems the addon is not dismissing rares I already have killed. For instance, I killed Alash'anir and Hydrath, which only can wield loot once per cycle of warfront. The addon still shows it as incomplete and doesn't dismiss it's skulls. It worked before the update. https://imgur.com/a/VkQiNRz
EDIT: It is also showing rares that, say, drops a toy that I already have, with a blue skull. I think the skull should change it's color when I already know the toy or mount, or even have the pet. I'm not sure if that's your intention
Hmm. I'll check to see if I made a logic error somewhere.
That said, for e.g. Hydrath, does the "quests" line in the tooltip say "incomplete"?
Actually, point, is that screenshot showing another addon that's saying Hydrath is still available as well? (Since there's two types of skull in about the right spot...)
Actually-actually...horde or alliance?
In reply to Kemayo:
I'm Horde. That second skull is Handy Notes Warfronts. I disabled it to make you a new screenshot, using only Silver Dragon skulls: https://imgur.com/a/9n9InHZ
EDIT 1: I am positive this is new with the update, as I am farming Alash'anir in several toons and I keep tabs outside wow on which alt killed it. I even tried killing it again to see if the addon would "learn" I killed it,
EDIT 2: I just updated again via curse client. Alash'anir is not showing anymore, since the addon seems to have learned I killed the rare. Thanks. However, I don't understand totally the colors for rares with known mounts or toys: Do you put anything different on them? I see blue skulls for rares with toy drops that I already know. For example, Handy Notes Warfront shows me a blue skull for unlearned rare pets/toys/mounts. SilverDragon colors are showing me lots of colors. See the screenshot, both Hydrath and Grimhorn drop pets. I know both pets. Hydrath is green, Gromhorn is dark purple.
So, I'm pretty sure the issue was just that I had the Alliance questids in there, and I've added in something where it knows to swap in the horde ones based on the player's faction. I checked and I hadn't touched the questid for Hydrath (in particular as the one I was checking) since I first got the questids in back in mid-2019, so I'm not sure why it'd have been working for you before.
As for colors... v80300.3 added a new "give each mob a unique color" option which I turned on by default. It makes it much easier to sort out any mobs which patrol an area, in particular. If you have that enabled, colors don't mean anything. If you prefer the old behavior, you can get it in the options in the "handynotes" section -- just look for "How to color the icons".
I'll think on making completion-status more obvious in this mode. It's probably a matter of working out specific icons for each state.
