Elephant
"Shoot... what did he say again? I just got disconnected."
"Didn't that folk already loot that rare item 10 minutes ago?"
"I really wish I could remember the name of the item linked on the guild chat yesterday at 9:00 PM."
...
Already been in one of these situations? Don't be annoyed anymore, here is the solution!
Solution to chat loss annoyance
Elephant logs the chat for you in the background even when you get disconnected. It saves the WHISPER & BATTLE.NET, RAID, INSTANCE & BATTLEGROUND, PARTY, GUILD, SAY, YELL and OFFICER chats separately, but also all general chats (General, Trade, LocalDefense, ...), custom chats you are currently on, achievements, loots and finally system messages (auctions, rolls, server going down, ...). You can easily go through all these logs, thanks to a straightforward interface displaying all the access buttons on the right side of the main window. You can access the options of the addon by typing /elephant and also bind a key to pop up the addon.
Elephant gives you the ability to copy up to 100,000 (yes, 100k) characters of logs to another application. A BBCode feature is even included, letting you copy/paste a chat with colors and links to an item database in a very quick and simple way to your favorite forum.
This is THE addon that you should install if you want to never forget what somebody told you in game. Be a pro of managing hell tells, go peacefully AFK for a few minutes, or be an awesome role player. Elephant is also perfectly designed for Guild Leaders, Officers and Raid Leaders particularly because it restores the chats after you've been disconnected.
Main features
- Logs the chats in the background, with a limit of 10,000 lines for each chat (Blizzard's default is 161 lines for everything).
- Saves the logs when you log out or get disconnected.
- Display the chats with timestamps, or using your Prat settings if you have it installed.
- Copy the chat and paste it in other applications (BBCode supported!), up to 100,000 characters.
- Save the chat and combat log in two different files on your computer (using the default Blizzard logging system).
Other features
- Use filters to avoid logging some of the custom channels you join.
- Enable/disable logging for each chat separately.
- Item links in logs are displayed in their proper color and are clickable.
- Player names in the main window are clickable.
- ...and much more!

Report an issue (bug & suggestions): https://www.wowace.com/projects/elephant/issues
I'm not completely sure what the issue is, but for some reason, no matter what I do, I can't stop logging all channels into the WoWCombatLog.txt. :/ It's really kind of an issue, since I use FlagRSP, and xtensiontooltip2 gets... Well... Really, really spammy... :/ I've been using ChatLog for the past few months, and it's always seemed to have the problem. And because of this channel, my log file is up to 81 megs... :/ I'd like to be able to comb through it, sometimes, for conversations, but with the way flagRSP works, and this being in the log, it becomes rather unwieldy to do so. Is there something I'm missing? It's always seemed bugged to me, and the person whom I was recommended the program by says she has the same problem.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I really love the idea behind the add-on, just this one issue, and to a lesser extent, the logging of things not wanted to the combat log file, as well, are my two issues with it.
Again, thank you in advance. :)
Hey pb_ee1! Great work.
I just have a single request for a function. Would it be possible to make an "save log to file" function, so it can update the text file without having to log out of the game? Or would it be possible to make the txt file update in real time?
If its just me that are a n00b and dont know this have allready been implemented, please correct me :D
Much respect Moonchild
@ Picachu: The icon can be moved or dragged, just click-drag the icon with your left button ;)
I am sorry, but the development of the AddOn has been *really* slowed down these weeks, mainly because I have a *huge* load of work :p
I am going to see if there is a nice way to log the chat, but I cannot guarantee that it will be like SimpleCombatLog. It will maybe only log the "normal" combat log ;)
Für alle deutschsprachige Menschen =)
Also diese(s) Mod bzw.
With latest revision 27998 a minimap icon was introdused and the old icon above the chat window was removed. It would be nice to have an option to either show it like the old way or as minimap icon. With all the minimap icons around i actually have no place for more. I neither could drag this icon anywhere at my screen to place it around the place where the old one was, that i am used to.
Maybe make this new icon moveable, so that there would be no reason to have an option for the old way.
I also agree with capturing the information from combat log like the addon simplecombatlog does, not in a file but like it captures the other chat windows. If possible.
Anyway, great addon. It makes life much easier at times. Keep up the good work. :)
where is the log file saved to?
With the new LFG system introduced I get my wowchatlog.txt spammed with messages from <player> joined the channel, <player> left the channel. Is there a way to stop logging this? Cos this is useless information for me.
I use a plugin called SimpleCombatLog. Is there any way for ChatLog to capture this information?
I'll try...thx
@RLD: I am going to check this tonight, and I'll post here when I'll know from where this bug is coming from ;)
@ Nihlo: It is not so simple, you must catch all the messages incoming to your client and use a regular expression (I think so) to check if the word "[itemdb]" is inside, and if so, avoid logging it to ChatLog.
If you have a few knowledge in LUA, you should look at the "CaptureNewMessage" function ;)
@pb_ee1 all whisps from itemdb start with [itemdb] never met a player whispering sth like that^^ I didn't want you to include the filter,I just wanted to ask if you could tell me how to make such a filter...
Since WOW 2.04 update the chatlog button is no longer showing. Even with this latest chatlog update. Under 2.04 when you type /clog resetbutton you at least got a chatwindow response back about it being moved. With 2.05 update I get no feedback and the button still doesn't appear.
@ Nihlo: Actually, I could add some filters to ChatLog, but the problem is that if ItemDB changes (for example), the filter would not work anymore. And if a player whispers exactly the same words that ItemDB use for any reason, it would not be logged.
So I don't think I will add something like this to ChatLog ;)
@ brr: ChatLog is now using Ace2 and what you ask for is not possible anymore. :)
got another prob...I use the http://wow.curse-gaming.com/en/files/details/2257/elkanos-itemdb/ which is sharing items by whispers which you don't see in you normal chatlog. BUT they are all in the chatlog^^ it's very annoying...do you've got an idea how to create a filter that whispers which are including "ItemDB" won't be logged ?
great mod btw
Having to type "/clog toggle" now instead of "/chatlog" to get it to pop up seems pretty pointless. Please fix this and add "/chatlog" back and keep up the good work!
@Op2x: Try using /clog ;)
@ FalconSpirit: I am currently adding these events to ChatLog, and it seems it is working pretty well ;)
PLEASE NOTE: I will NOT be able to develop ChatLog during the two next weeks, I'm on vacations ;) But there will be a new release when I will come back :p
i have a problem, chatlog's button doesnt show, when i type /chatlog it said "this function is disabled".i need to use a key binding to open the chatlog's window...just wanna to know how to show that small chatlog button?
Along the same lines, perhaps CHAT_MSG_MONSTER_SAY, and CHAT_MSG_MONSTER_WHISPER in the appropriate logs too.
And maybe CHAT_MSG_EMOTE and CHAT_MSG_MONSTER_EMOTE in the Say log? Not too sure if people would want that.
It'd be more work, but a toggle for logging NPC stuff or not might be an option too.
@ FalconSpirit: This should be possible. I'll include it in the next release ;)
I updated a new zip file that contains the bug fix, thanks Dabeuliou ;)
Je viens d'uploader le fichier zip avec le correctif, merci Dabeuliou ;) En fait, cela venait d'une mauvaise manipulation lors de la compression de l'archive xD
