Cartographer 3.0

Table of Contents

This is a map addon for World of Warcraft that replaces the map and offers shiny features.

The idea is for it to work very much like Google Maps, only in-game.

Cartographer 3.0 is brand new, "experimental" version of Cartographer.

anyway if you do not test your RAM with memtest86 prior to arg an addon causes you a crash then it has no value at all. I will explain you why. Cartographer3 eats a lot of memory depending what you are doing, and it could happen it uses at a time a memory region which is not used by wow nor any other addon but think, if this memory region is defective, then the crash/freeze will happen only when carto3 uses this part of the memory because nothing else uses it but does this mean Carto3 is bugged ? absolutely no, YOU are bugging carto3 because you do not offer him a clean place where to work. memtest86 is a reputable tool anyway if the test fails then you do have a dead ram for sure, remove it and replace it.

Anyone else with this 'out of memory' problem? The trouble (here at least) isn't bad RAM, I'm running with 4x 2GB sticks of ECC enabled ram and it never logged a corrupted bit or chipkill message in the eventlog.

The problem is that WoW is running into the 2 GB per process memory limit for 32 bit programs, when the 'Virtual Memory' number (seen in Task Manager / Process Explorer) rises above that number, malloc fails.

This doesn't mean that Cartographer 3 is bugged, but more that WoW isn't too smart about how much memory it can allocate. A quick test shows that Cartographer 3 can help trigger a crash.

Load WoW, without C3 -> 1.0G memory used.
Load C3 with ACP + reload ui, open map, browse around the minimap -> 1.4G memory used.
Take the scenic route around Northrend (Howling Fjord -> Dalaran -> Borean Tundra): crashed when memory usage rises above 1.9G.

For now, my workaround is to watch wow's memory usage and restart the game when it rises above 1.7-1.8G.

Hypothesis: WoW watches the Free Memory count, which is stuck at around 4G here, so it never frees any opened texture, world data, etc etc, but it doesn't know that going over 2G will kill itself.

Please I beg of you, release an update I greatly prefer this version of cartographer but am becoming somewhat overwhelmed by a few bugs (namely the cart Notes)and lack of dalaran

I like this as an on-screen replacement/augmentation of the mini map. I don't particularly want to use it to replace the cart2 map however as I like that better for the map. What I'd love to see is a feature where you could have this open at all times (e.g. pressing esc doesn't close it) and still keep the regular/cart2 map as the map replacement.

Best map add-on that I've seen. Orders of magnitude better than Blizz's original map.
Now we just need the Northrend updates...
Awesome work, should win an award for best concept add-on....

I've used this version of Cart since it was released recently, but, sadly, just had to switch back to teh original, more stable version. There're just too many bugs and weird issues still (no Dalaran or any Northrend instance maps, weird lag and random map behaviour, etc), though I will voice my hopes that this version eventually becomes the main one because I, too, adore what you've done with it. Strangely, I never liked the Google map style before, but now, it kind of sucks going back to the orignal, which I'd used all along before.

So, cheers and much appreciation for so much work put in so far, and eagerly waiting for more on this new, very superior imho, version :)

The addon is amazing.. once I tried it I can't ever go back to Cartographer (1) or any other map that doesn'e let you do with it so easy whatever you want.
I'd just appreciate an update for some Northrend maps which are overlapping atm.

I absolutely LOVE what you've done with Cart3. I esp like the added graphics for the super high zoom level. Ignore the people who lack reading comprehension and don't understand this is "experimental". Good work, keep it coming.

an addon does not cause crash but defective memory RAM or video card could. I recommand you to test your RAM with the memtest86 tool checking RAM at boot

I love this addon, but vy 3.0.3 client crashes when I enable it.
3.0.2 worked fine though

This is incorrect; the addon definitely can be the cause of a crash/lockup. 100% reproducible on my end when leaving Dalaran, and sometimes occurs just from wandering around the city as well.

I like the overall of carto2 because it's a project done with lots of stable stuffs but when I see the carto3 zoom capability to have the world map up to the minimap definition, no doubt I keep the v3 :)

I updated to this one as previous did not work for ages with LK.
If this is the next gen, why not update it?
Notes screw up map and other addons.
Dalaran city no in there
Other shortcomings.
I do like the zoom in / out, drag around stuff but it's far from finished.
Pity, I think this would be a great update to cart2

I don't see what the problem was with the previous version of Cartographer. This has to be the crappiest Cartographer or map mod I've come across. Stop trying to emulate Carbonite, it's not working. This is very annoying and hard to see the world.
