Confirmed fix:

if not item then return end
=>
if not item or strmatch(item, "battlepet:") then return end

This: - removes the error when selecting the send mail tab - allows right-clicking to add a caged battle pet to the list of 12 items to send - does not allow alt-clicking to add caged battle pets to the long bulkmail list

As of today, this is still relevant.  The fix for Legion was:

   if not item then return end
