Q: How can I backup my KoS-Data & Settings
A: Copy the file WoW\WTF\Account\*YourAccountName*\SavedVariables\VanasKoS.lua to a safe place of your choosing.

Q: I found a LUA-Error/Bug, What shall I do?
A: Goto and describe what you did to cause the problem (or when it happened) and post the lua-error-message. As we may have additional questions, please check back in/have a valid email at curse for ticket updates.

Q: I have a great idea for the addon! Want to hear it?
A: Goto and post your idea.

Q: I like living on the edge. Where can I get the latest alpha version?
A: Use these versions at your own peril:

Q: Why aren't my guild members entries displaying?
A: Make sure that you do not have "Show only my entries" checked. You and your guild members must also enable sharing of their lists with the guild.

Q: How can I add some additional mp3 sound files for notifications?
A: You can either send them to me with a license disclaimer that allows the distribution/packaging with vanaskos (if you own the rights) or You can add your own sounds by modifying WoW/Interface/AddOns/VanasKoS/modules/Notifier.lua The list of sounds is at the top of that file. Just put your extra sound files somewhere inside the WoW directory. VanasKoS uses LibSharedMedia-3.0 so it also has access to any other addon's sounds."

Distributed Tracking:

Q: How does the Distributed Tracking works?
A: Fine, Thanks!

Q: I see weird messages in my Chat Window on the Channel CrbZ????, What's up with that?
A: It's not normally supposed to be visible. But you can disable the displaying of that channel in the settings for the chat window. Just uncheck it there.

Q: My channel-numbers are all screwed up
A: It seems that your computer is too slow. VanasKoS joins the Distributed Tracking Channels 20 seconds after login/changing the Zone. You can modify this value manually in WoW\Interface\AddOns\VanasKoS\modules\DistributedTracker.lua under "JOIN_DELAY".

Help the Addon/Authors:

Q: How can I help with localization?
A: Goto and get started!

Q: How can I support the authors and development of this addon?
A: You can either use the "Donate"-Button on the curse VanasKoS-Page, or get a curse-premium Account. Curse gives a part of their earnings through the premium-program back to the addon-authors.

Q: I can code in lua and want to develop xyz?
A: Write me a PM with your idea and experience - I'll review the idea and if it's finished include it in vanaskos, or if you want to develop more add you as a co-author.

Q: How much do you make with this addon?
A: Near to nothing - My (Vanas) payment/hour for VanasKoS is less than 10cents, don't worry though - it's a hobby for the authors, so the revenue isn't a factor for development, but it also means that the real-life job is more important, so bear with us when answers/development take a little longer.

Q: Vana...Vana.. I seem to remember this name from Lineage2
A: You are right, I worked on a popular (and the first) lineage2 drop-database back then.

Q: License?
A: VanasKoS is mostly licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.5 License. Note: Soundfiles/Graphics/Libraries used may be licensed differently.

Since ya'll are not in a guild r378 alpha may not be right for you if. It currently only has support for guild synchronization. The last revision before the switch to ace3 was r276 on November 19th, 2008. Any version previous to it should have the old-style synchronization.
One thing your friends can check is to make sure that "Show only my entries" is not checked. That through me once.
If you do move make the move up to r378, make a backup copy of your WTF (specifically WTF/Account/<Your Account Name>/SavedVariables/VanasKoS.lua), and move or delete the old version of VanasKoS. Your lists will automatically be upgraded to the new format. If you decide to drop back to 3.X you'll have to restore the backup copy of the saved variables to see your lists again.
I can only assume the synchronizer works the same way now as it used too. But basically when you log into the game you broadcast your lists to your guild. And then once every hour while logged on. Individual player synchronization was more complicated. It would keep track of the last sync time of each player. If the last time was over 6 hours ago. It would try to synchronize entries with that player every couple of minutes, until it succeeded. I only learned how it worked after reading through the code, and I'm still not 100% certain. Vana's goal in 4.0 is to make the process simpler and easier to understand. Assuming he gets some time to work on it.
Ok now the wanted list (only in 3.X for now). It is for when you when you want to receive notification of somebody in your KoS from other players using VanasKoS. It does not change notifications of when you see somebody in your own list. So when you mark somebody in your list as wanted, it signals to other players you even want to know if *they* see that player. If somebody sees your wanted enemy, that player notifies you of the position. You will also send a message to other players when you see somebody in their wanted list. There are three sources and destinations these wanted lists can be sent to or received from. The global VanasKoSAceComm channel, the local AceComm zone channel, and guild.
I hope Vana and I can spend some more time getting these 3.X features back into 4.0, but it needs some simplification and/or documentation.

@Xilcoy: thanks so much for your reply... after re-reading my post i felt a little guilty for barraging you with so many questions hehe. please take it as a compliment as we are very excited about making VanasKOS a main part of our Warcraft experience.

right now... my friends and I (4 of us) are NOT in a guild and rely on the auto-sync function for our KOS lists... for some reason 2 of the 4 players do not receive any lists. i can confirm we all have the send and receive lists enabled. do you think r378 alpha would work for us? if so, should we delete our cache, wdb, wtf, interface folders before moving to r378?

and lastly, can you clarify a few more things: does the once-per-hour sync'ing occur repeatedly after logging online? or does it occur just once within the first hour online thus requiring relogging to receive updated lists? also.. when you say the "wanted" list is for those players you wish to receive a "notification" when you see them - does this mean the players on the KOS list will not trigger a notification? only the sound alert?

again.. thank you x1000 for your work on VanasKOS!

@reehay: The auto-sync occurs once an hour when using v3.16. And you have to be sure to enable the lists you wish to send and receive. "lookup in VanasKoS" is supposed to return whether or not the player is in one of your lists. I only add enemies to my kos list. I add friendly players who I don't want to party with to my hate list. I use nicelist for the rare occasion an enemy player is well, nice. Or sometimes just to add a note for friend. The wanted list in 3.16 is part of the distributed tracking module. It is the list of players others have marked as "wanted" and you will send notification for if you see.

If you are feeling brave you can try r378 alpha. I finished debugging Vana's guild synchronization code with somebody in my guild we were able to see each other's lists.

i love the addon but im assuming the sync option isnt fully working (we're using v3.16)? some friends and i are trying to send and receive our KOS lists but only some of us are receiving anything. does the auto-sync occur only when you first log online? enter a zone? or must we be right clicking each other's names in our Friends window and performing "look up in VanasKOS"? and what is the difference between a "hatelist" and "kos" list? and when i flag players as "wanted" should they be adding to the "wanted" list? because mine stays blank.

in any case, VanasKOS is still great and we look forward to future releases.. thanks for your work and time.

Hey, good work on this mod so far. Any update on when guild synchronization is coming to 4.0? We're having issues with 3.0 failing to sync and losing player data constantly, so we're definitely anxious for 4.0 to get to release!

Hi..great mod. One addition I would like to see is the option to disable the mod while in a battleground as I don't require it to be tracking information while in them. Keep up the good work.

Lombra: Alright. It should work the way you expect now.

    • /kadd [list] [name or <guild name>] [reason]
      • list is optional but can be hate, nice, or kos (default)
      • name is the player to add if it is enclosed with '<' and '>' it will be interpreted as a guild name. If no name is given the target is used. If there is no target (or it's not a player) you get a popup asking for the name.
      • reason is any further arguments. If no reason is given, another popup window asks for it.

Thank you both, then. (again) :)

Edit: Hm, doesn't seem to have done the trick, I'm afraid. I still get the name prompt, doing /kadd with a target selected.

Sorry I didn't think about the PvPStats not being there. Try 372+
