ManagingMainsAlts

One of the most requested features for the rewrite of SKG was for the ability to have associations between Mains and Alts. Many guilds were managing this previously by reserving mains for every raid, and having many positions in the list move at the same time to simulate this behavior.

The newer versions of SKG now support this functionality natively. Please note that you do not have to use this feature at all. Simply inserting all toons into the Players List as mains will mean that you will not be using this function.

Creating a Main/Alt Association

The key to managing this correctly is to always insert a Main toon into the Players List first. Once the Main is in, any subsequent insertions of Alt toons should check the "Character is Alt" checkbox, and select the character's Main from the list.

Advantages

The principle advantage of managing your Players in this way is that the position in the lists represents a person instead of a character. It is then up to that person to determine which of his currently active raiding toons he wants to gear up, and save his position (and bidding power) for loot events favoring that toon. It certainly also keeps your Raiding Roll lists much smaller since they will only have one entry per person.

Disadvantages

None really to speak of except at a theoretical level. Some guilds consider every person's contributions on individual toons (mains and alts alike) as individual progressions that should be rewarded separately. Guilds who want to keep the progression (and list position) of mains and alts distinct and separate should simply never assign players as alts, and insert every toon as a main.

Limitations

The code cannot handle the following situation if you decide to use the Main/Alt relationships feature:

  • A person, lets call him "John" has two accounts, for simplicity's sake, I'm going to call them 'j1' and 'j2'
  • On account 'j1', John makes a toon named Fnord, and on account 'j2', John makes a toon named Xyzzy.
  • In SKG, both toons, Fnord and Xyzzy are both associated with the same main, or between the two toons, have a main/alt relationship
  • Let's assume that John invites Bill over to his house, and they both jump on machines, each playing one of John's accounts.
  • Under NO circumstances can both Fnord and Xyzzy both participate in raids at the same time (either in the same raid, or in separate raids).
