ScrollingCombatText
Please read and use the main SCT site for news, bugs, and feature requests. I don't read these forums hardly ever.
Be sure to check out SCTD 2.0 if you want SCT to show your damage.
Also check out my simple but enhanced combat log EavesDrop
What is it?
A fairly simple but very configurable mod that adds damage, heals, and events (dodge, parry, windfury, etc...) as scrolling text above you character model, much like what already happens above your target. This makes it so you do not have to watch (or use) your regular combat chat window and gives it a "Final Fantasy" feel.
Why use 5.0 over WoW's new built in Floating Combat Text ? - SCT 5.0 is a complete rewrite of the mod from the ground up. Its is now based in the Ace2 framework and rewitten with more performance in mind. On top of that, it offers features far above and beyond what WoW's FCT can do. FCT is great if you just need a lightweight SCT with limited options, but using SCT's new Lightmode can get you the same performance with almost all of SCT's normal features.
What can it do?
- Damage messages
- Heals (incoming and outgoing) and Overhealing (with healer ID's), with filtering for small heals.
- Spell Damage/Resists and Damage Type
- All "Miss" events (dodge, block, immune, etc...)
- Custom Colors for all text events
- Config file to setup custom events (self and target), capture data, and display it.
- Debuff/Buff gain and loss Messages
- Low Health and Mana Warnings with values, and optional sounds
- Rage/Mana/Energy Gains
- Enter and Leave Combat Messages
- Rogue Combo Points, 5 CP Alert Message
- Class Skill alerts (Execute, Overpower, CounterAttack, etc...)
- Honor, Reputation, Skill Gain
- Eight Animation Types (Verticle, Rainbow, Horizontal, Angled Down, Angled Up, Sprinkler, Curved HUD, Angled HUD)
- Four Fonts
- Two seperate Animation frames, each with their own settings. Assign any Event to either.
- Ability to flag any event as critical or as a text messages
- Sliders for text size, opacity, animation speed, movement speed, and on screen placement (with custom editbox)
- Lightmode, for when you care most about performance (at the loss of a few features).
- Now Based in Ace2.
- CTMod, MyAddons, Cosmos, Cosmos2 support
- Settings saved per character by default, but supports all Ace2 Profiles
- Load/Delete settings from another character. Load built in Profiles.
- Localized to work in almost all WoW clients.
How do I use it?
First unzip it into your interface\addons directory. For more info on installing, please read install.txt. Now just run WoW and once logged in, type /sctmenu to get the options screen.
SCT_EVENT_CONFIG.LUA is used to setup custom message events. Please open up the file (notepad, etc...) and read the opening section to understand how to use it all. PLEASE NOTE - THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FILE IN SCT. IF YOU DON'T READ IT AND USE IT, THEN YOU ARE MISSING OUT ON A TON OF WHAT SCT HAS TO OFFER IN CUSTOMIZATION
/sctdisplay is used to create your own custom messages. Useage: /sctdisplay 'message' red(0-10) green(0-10) blue(0-10) Example: /sctdisplay 'Heal Me' 10 0 0 - This will display 'Heal Me' in bright red
FAQ
How do I get My Crits or My Hits to show? I would suggest you get SCTD: http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/fileinfo.php?id=4913
My custom event doesn't work. What's wrong? - Make sure you have the text exactly right, punctuation and capitalization matters. If you need help learning how to capture data, please see the examples or try this site http://lua-users.org/wiki/PatternsTutorial. If its still not working, please read about SCT_Event_Debug and SCT_Event_List in the bottom half of SCT_EVENT_CONFIG.LUA to learn how to add almost any chat event to SCT's search capabilities
How do I change the text for parry, block, etc...? - open up the localiztions.lua file and look for the event you want to change. Then change the text to whatever you like. As of 4.1, you may also now add a custom event for these. As of 5.0 You will get notifications automatically for event specfic skills like Overpower, CounterAttack, etc...
How do I get get text to scroll? I only see numbers! - Make sure the "Show Events as Message" option is unchecked. This is only if you want events to appear as static text (not scrolling/animated)
I don't understand what the 2 frames are for! - Each frame lets you set different features. So you can set frame one using Sprinker animation and Default font, while frame 2 can be using Veritcle animation and Adventure font. You can then assign each event to a specfic frame using the radio buttons next to the events.
There's too many options. Help someone new see how things work! - Try out some of the new built in profiles. While on the options screen, click the "Profiles" button. At the top of the window will be a listing of some default profiles to try out. Maybe you'll fine one you like or it will spark some ideas for you to try.
How do I change the fonts? - You can now select from four fonts on the options page. You can also change the font of message and apply the font to the in game damage font used for your damage (requires relog)
I don't like friendly nameplates on. How do I make my heals appear over who I heal? - Friendly nameplates have to be on in order to show your heals. SCT will turn them on if you turn on the option, but you must manually turn them off if you don't like it (see Target keybindings).
I don't like the new spell icons, how do I turn them off? - There is an option to turn them off under the animation tab.

The German localization is nearly done, just needs some more testing... What i noticed was, that we, for some reason, have lots of different Messages for being hit...
"Hits you for" -> "trifft euch für <dmg amount>" AND "trifft Euch (mit <spell/skill>. Schaden <dmg amount>"
This has been added, but is not fully working yet and needs a bit more testing... Hope to get it done this weekend...
Juki, thanks for doing the French translation. I'll make sure to include it in the next relase.
I'm going to make some changes to the files to better accomdate other languages based on what you did, but I will take care of moving all the French tanslations into the new format.
I'm also tweaking the animation system quite a bit for the next release, so it should look and behave a lot better.
Hi !
I have finished to localize and test this great mod for french client :)
You could find this here : http://www.jukiller.org/ModsWoW/ScrollingCombatText2.5_TradFRByJuki.zip
I have to add a "SCT_YOU_GAIN2" new variable in localization.lua (and modify the sct.lua where i needed), cause in french client we have 2 phrases for "You gain", we have ""Vous gagnez " and "vous fait gagner ".
In "sct_event_config.lua", i have add the french equivalences with "1000" as starting ID to avoid the problems.
Hope you'll include this in your next release :)
Here are some "constan" you can find in he GlobalStrings.lua. If you don't have your copy, you can get it using the Blizzard UI tool. NOTE: rename your interface before running the tool. It'll extract all TGA and xml used for the Normal UI.
PERIODICAURAHEALOTHERSELF = "You gain %d health from %s's %s."; -- You gain 12 health from John's Rejuvenation. (there are other line with "healt from"...)
here are some info from the US release. AURAADDEDSELFHARMFUL = "You are afflicted by %s."; -- Combat log text for aura events AURAADDEDSELFHELPFUL = "You gain %s."; -- Combat log text for aura events
Using stuff from those variable should help alot(at least it made my addons 100% compatible/translated, except the help menu :)
Hi !
My translation is almost finished but i miss some events.
SCT_HEALTH_SEARCH = "health from "; SCT_YOU_GAIN_AMOUNT_SEARCH = "You gain (%d*)"; SCT_DEBUFF_NAME_SEARCH = "You are afflicted by (%w*%s*%w*)";
What is it "(%w*%s*%w*)" ? How could i find all of this in the french client ? Which spell use it ? etc...
Another thing, for the absorb, in the french client we have partial absorb, like partial block, when the absorb spell arrived at the end.
In French for example : "Limon de mucus vous inflige 83 points de dégâts (11 abosrbés)."
And a last thing, it will be great that you make "sct_event_config.lua" localizable too for the ones you have already put in ;)
Thx for your answer ;)
Juki
Thx for your latest version with localization.lua ;)
I'm actually localizing it for french and i have seen a little error :)
Line 64 : SCTOptionsFrameEventFrames ["Show Blocks"] = { index = 5, tooltipText = "Show Buffs/Debuffs in a tooltip when you mouse-over a party member", SCTVar = "SHOWBLOCK"};
Incompatiblity block with buff/debuff :p
I'll keep you informed of my translation.
Cya =)
Thanks for the new version. It's cool to finally see fall and fire damage.
agreed.
i can't stand startup messages and always remove those pesky things when installing a new mod/version...
Grayhoof, I was hoping if you would consider removing the startup message as this only leads to even more spamming of the chatscreen. It's bad enought with Blizzard's MotD.
"Adding scrolling text to group members is probably the most asked for request. This is something that cannot be done, as the game does not provide the UI any way to know where group members are on your screen (at least not that I know of). If someone knows how to pull this info from the WoW API then let me know =)"
Let's hope the next patch with it's fancy pants chat bubbles exposes the screen position of party members :)
Question: Is there a way to display the spell names? I'd like to see my pet go "GROWL!" or "BITE <DMG>" cause I never know what he's doing. This would be cool for damage over time spells too.
Great mod! Keep up the good work!
Hi, seems to be a great AddOn :p
It would be very great if you could make a version with a localization.lua, i'll translate it for French if you do this ;)
Absolutley would love it if I could see when my nightfall procs. Currently I have not found a mod that lets you see this, and if you could integrate it into your already superb mod, I would be one happy camper.
Please make it works for the french client because it simply do not work ;(
Great job !
Hey man,
I've been using SCT for a while now. It's a most have.
First: I've got a suggestion. I don't know how difficult it would be. My suggestion is: make an option to hide damage numbers on your avatar/player portrait. I guess it's possible. What do you think?
Second: Also it would be good if you can make the damage numbers DON'T mix up with each other. Make some kind of "collison boxes" around the text. As a warrior I often have multiple mobs aggroing on me while tanking or just fooling around. Well, ofcourse I will be beaten up by all of them, causing SCT present the damage numbers in an unreadable mess.
Grayhoof,
if you could put all the things which should be translated in a seperate localization.lua file, I would translate it to german and it would be possible / easier for french people to translate too ...
But in the current state ...
I have no idea, what I have to translate in your files ?!??
(I made a translation for the Reagent Watch Addon too, because I like it so much ...)
Regards, Xadros
It is quite possible if you take a different approach. I can think of a few but the best would be a moveable (and hideable)icon pulled from the face of each party member the way the default party menu does. Then have the text scroll up, down, or sideways from this icon. SO you could for example have pics of the party members across the top of the screen with text scrolling down off them. Or hide the icons and move them near the part frame and have them scroll sideways out from that party member. Etc. Another idea of interest is to allow the spot above your head to show a specified party member rather than yourself. Possibly even a dynamic option so that it shows the party member you have targetted above yourself for example or the party member who is taking the most damage. Some situations make it so that certain classes like priest do not need to see their own information but knowing how hard your warrior tank is being hit or just how badly that add is kicking your rogues bum at a glance might be quite useful.
Adding scrolling text to group members is probably the most asked for request. This is something that cannot be done, as the game does not provide the UI any way to know where group members are on your screen (at least not that I know of). If someone knows how to pull this info from the WoW API then let me know =)
SCT works by just putting the numbers in the middle top of your screen. Since your character model is always in the center, it gives the illusion of being over your head. If you goto first person view, you can see that the SCT numbers are still in the same place =)
Just read this in a post and thought it a brilliant idea! How bout having scrolling numbers on party members for when they take damage etc. Can this be done or is this something way too complicated? I think this mod is #$%en awesome btw! Well done mate, absolutely love it!
EDIT: Soz no swear filter, took out expletive in case of offence.
Opacity - It starts at close to 100% and goes to 0 as it moves, so there' not really anyway to change it. Try slowing it down if you aren't having enough time to read it
Natural Health Regen - I'll have to see what it takes to add this. Its not a chat event, but I know other mods display it so I'll see what I can do. Will be off by default for sure though, as it will probably be way to many numbers for most people =)
/sctdisplay is for your viewing only. Its mainly just to use in macros and such. I personally don't use it, but thought someone might find a use for it =)
Other language versions - I don't really think I can do that. I don't know other languages =(, and I don't have the clients to have any way to test things. If others want to create a localization file for these languages that's cool with me and I'll try and incorporate it, but no promises.
hi The next version will be compatible with the french version ?
thx
