349 - Revealing who is actually pro.
So often in raids/5 mans, there are the "high DPSers", that will not stop attacking/casting (no matter what) because it impacts their standing in damage meters.
They will languish in AoE, auras, ground effects, etc. assuming that healers have nothing better to do than to waste mana healing THEM, when all they would have to do is take 3 steps in any direction to stop taking unnecessary damage.
This is not MY idea of an accomplished, skilled player.
I've seen wipes caused by healers going OOM because unskilled DPS will not learn, or implement the mechanic of a fight, because it will impact their ability to top the damage meters, and the healers that kept them alive don't have mana left to keep the tank up. Yet all the damage meter shows is that they did very high DPS, not the fact that they were "high maintenance" for healers. Obviously healers eventually figure out what's going on, and stop healing them as much, but there isn't really a single meter that can reveal this entire story, yet.
If simply ignoring encounter mechanics, puts someone at the top of a damage meter, and they are subsequently praised for their skill, the data is incomplete.
Most players are not aware of the "damage taken/healing taken" meters, or what they mean in relation to the Damage Done meter. It actually exposes who is "good" and who is not, to a degree (Tanks excluded obviously). Players that keep Wards/shields/etc.up and instantly move out of damaging ground effects to avoid unnecessary damage, and still manage to do fairly high DPS, are the real pros.
Just like there is an "effective healing" strategy in Recount, it would be nice if there were a "Skill" meter, or "effective damage" meter, that would simply reduce damage done by damage taken (or healing taken) for an encounter. This would provide a more comprehensive/complete view of what an individual player is actually providing to the raid.
