Elephant
"Shoot... what did he say again? I just got disconnected."
"Didn't that folk already loot that rare item 10 minutes ago?"
"I really wish I could remember the name of the item linked on the guild chat yesterday at 9:00 PM."
...
Already been in one of these situations? Don't be annoyed anymore, here is the solution!
Solution to chat loss annoyance
Elephant logs the chat for you in the background even when you get disconnected. It saves the WHISPER & BATTLE.NET, RAID, INSTANCE & BATTLEGROUND, PARTY, GUILD, SAY, YELL and OFFICER chats separately, but also all general chats (General, Trade, LocalDefense, ...), custom chats you are currently on, achievements, loots and finally system messages (auctions, rolls, server going down, ...). You can easily go through all these logs, thanks to a straightforward interface displaying all the access buttons on the right side of the main window. You can access the options of the addon by typing /elephant and also bind a key to pop up the addon.
Elephant gives you the ability to copy up to 100,000 (yes, 100k) characters of logs to another application. A BBCode feature is even included, letting you copy/paste a chat with colors and links to an item database in a very quick and simple way to your favorite forum.
This is THE addon that you should install if you want to never forget what somebody told you in game. Be a pro of managing hell tells, go peacefully AFK for a few minutes, or be an awesome role player. Elephant is also perfectly designed for Guild Leaders, Officers and Raid Leaders particularly because it restores the chats after you've been disconnected.
Main features
- Logs the chats in the background, with a limit of 10,000 lines for each chat (Blizzard's default is 161 lines for everything).
- Saves the logs when you log out or get disconnected.
- Display the chats with timestamps, or using your Prat settings if you have it installed.
- Copy the chat and paste it in other applications (BBCode supported!), up to 100,000 characters.
- Save the chat and combat log in two different files on your computer (using the default Blizzard logging system).
Other features
- Use filters to avoid logging some of the custom channels you join.
- Enable/disable logging for each chat separately.
- Item links in logs are displayed in their proper color and are clickable.
- Player names in the main window are clickable.
- ...and much more!

Posted Oct 1, 2025in MOP Classic the following Error appears when changing loot system:
2x AceLocale-3.0-6: Elephant: Missing entry for 'STRING_LOOT_METHOD__2'
it seems that with the latest changes with C_PartyInfo.GetLootMethod the Return Value is no longer a String, its a number now: https://warcraft.wiki.gg/wiki/API_C_PartyInfo.GetLootMethod
so i added
L['STRING_LOOT_METHOD__0'] = ERR_SET_LOOT_FREEFORALL
L['STRING_LOOT_METHOD__3'] = ERR_SET_LOOT_GROUP
L['STRING_LOOT_METHOD__2'] = ERR_SET_LOOT_MASTER
L['STRING_LOOT_METHOD__4'] = ERR_SET_LOOT_NBG
L['STRING_LOOT_METHOD__1'] = ERR_SET_LOOT_ROUNDROBIN
to the Locale-deDE.lua for German localization, to get rid of the error.

Thank you! That looks like an easy fix now. I guess adding both will easily support both cases, so I'll do that!

Posted Sep 20, 2025I have a very odd problem. When I go back to look at my chat logs in Elephant window, I see the chats, but the player listed is not the right person. It's someone on my friend list, but a different friend, not the person I was chatting with .
Not sure if this makes sense. Basically, I have a chat with battle.net tag friend A. Later on, I open Elephant window to read the chat, and see all the conversations, but friend A is now replaced with friend B.
Any idea what happened?

For privacy reasons, Blizzard forbids addons from determining the authors of Battle.net messages, so the addon makes a best guess, but cannot get it right every time unfortunately. :(
This is a limitation of the Blizzard API and afaik there is no way to circumvent it.

Posted Sep 10, 2025As of 11.2.7 there's an outdated API call for: GetLootMethod() but this was moved into the C_PartyInfo namespace and returns an enum instead of string tokens. I replaced the line in Initialize.lua:
`Elephant.volatileConfiguration.lootmethod = GetLootMethod()`
With:
`Elephant.volatileConfiguration.lootmethod = Elephant_GetLootMethodCompat()`
And made a simple helper function:
```
local function Elephant_GetLootMethodCompat()
if C_PartyInfo and C_PartyInfo.GetLootMethod then
local methodEnum = C_PartyInfo.GetLootMethod()
local map = {
[Enum.LootMethod.Freeforall] = "freeforall",
[Enum.LootMethod.Roundrobin] = "roundrobin",
[Enum.LootMethod.Masterlooter] = "master",
[Enum.LootMethod.Group] = "group",
[Enum.LootMethod.Needbeforegreed] = "needbeforegreed",
[Enum.LootMethod.Personal] = "personalloot",
}
return map[methodEnum]
elseif _G.GetLootMethod then
return _G.GetLootMethod()
end
return nil
end
```
This seemed to fix it on my side, but I haven't done much testing yet. I don't know Elephant's code space too well, so please code review this and make sure I didn't leave anything out! Great addon!

Posted Aug 21, 2025Does the Chat logs are stored in a file and i can backup them for later?
I mean like having a history weeks or month ago to look what someone typed in raid chat or whisper while raiding.

Yes but this is a feature that is made by Blizzard, not by me. You must enable it within the addon settings, and your chats will be all saved to Logs\\WoWChatLog.txt. That said, this feature has no possible customization or anything similar, unfortunately.

Posted Aug 9, 2025Worth noting that the mod is still functioning at the moment, its minimap icon is just not there. If you go into the options and turn on the "Show Chat Button" button, you can still access Elephant without doing any file poking or anything like that.

Posted Aug 5, 2025I'm sure the mod authors are aware and working on getting the fix posted, but for anyone who wants the fix now and isn't afraid to poke at files, this is how you fix the error with 11.2.
In the Initialize.lua file, change line 48 to be:
Elephant.volatileConfiguration.lootmethod = C_PartyInfo.GetLootMethod()
