Mini-Guide to Fewer Digs

Mini-Guide to fewer digs

The further away a fragment is from the survey location the more the direction accuracy diminishes.

  • Green: 5-40y and almost directly where the Theodolite is pointing.
  • Yellow: 40-80y possibly at a narrow angle to the left or right of the theodolite.
  • Red: More than 80y and potentially at a very wide angle to the left or right of the theodolite.

We mount / fly for red distance and walk/run for green and yellow (unless you're a druid with instant flight form)

The method

Apply the following two simple tricks.

  1. Double-survey Red.
That's right, if you get a red theodolite do another survey on the spot. This will allow you to limit the angle variance significantly.
    • ↑ ↑ Your 2 theodolites align perfectly there's a good chance the fragment is where they're both pointing.
    • \ / or / \ Your 2 theodolites are pointing at an angle to each other, there's a good chance the fragment is towards the split of their angle.
  2. Adjust the distance of your 'jump' to next dig depending on the theodolites alignment.
    • ↑ ↑ Your 2 theodolites aligned perfectly.
Move +Red distance from your current location: 90-100y away.
    • \ / Your 2 theodolites are pointing at an angle to each other.
Move Red+Yellow to Red+Red distance (further) from your current location: 140-160y away.

Take into account the borders of the digsite and survey nodes Archy has recorded before.

These two things will help you lower the number of Red digs you need to do before you're into the yellow and green zone where locating the fragment becomes trivial.

Try it out ;)
