Usage
Sniff can be summoned using a keybinding. Simply type "/item <item ID>" and hit enter. If the item data is in your local cache, the tooltip will pop up immediately. If not, you'll see a warning that the data is not in your local cache, and to click to try to ask the server for the data.
Warning: if the item has not been seen by a player on your server since the last server reboot, you WILL be disconnected from the game.
If all goes well, you'll get an item tooltip; shift-click it to link it to chat, or ctrl-click to dressing room it.

Options
There is a menu option to skip the confirmation for server queries, but that's it for options - straightforward and simple.
