Rest In Peace: files.wowace and WowAceUpdater

As I'm sure many of you have heard or scene today marks the day where these services have been discontinued.

Rest in Peace

Today has marked the day where this page has been officially discontinued in favor of the newer systems that have recently been deployed.

While I know not everyone is happy over the changed we're going through and the current state of them I want everyone to know that what has happened has had to happen. I apologize that we didn't have enough time to get everything 100% right, but we're working as hard as we can across the board to make things right. It however is an uphill fight.

For those who don't know....

A few months ago I posted a long forum post outlining the current state of WowAce and what had to be done to allow the services to continue. I talked to authors and users alike trying to come up with the best solutions possible. And now we're here.

It's been a glorious if bumpy ride. The success we've experienced on this page and the updater have been an amazing accident, and we weren't prepared for it.

A little over a year ago Curse.com started subsidizing our servers, and for a time that was enough to get us through the worst of it. But we just kept growing.

Things reached a critical mass during 2.4. We filled up the entirety of the 1 gigabit connection we where using and ended up pushing out more than 300GB an hour. With more than 500k users downloading updates for every small change things just couldn't keep up financially.

So that leads us to today.

In Closing

We encourage all users who are looking for updates for their addons to head over to Curse.com and look around. If you're looking for Beta and or Alpha releases and are part of our testing community please join us on the new site.

If you're used to using WowAceUpdater or one of the other third party clients that used this page we encourage you to try out the new Curse Client. It's not as polished as we'd like and it will certainly receive a lot more work here in the new future.

The above text appeared this morning on files.wowace.com.

I do this with a heavy heart in many ways, but it has to be done, and not is all lost for there is much to be excited about as well. We have an exciting opportunity to reforge out past mistakes into something amazing. No it will not be pleasant, but yes we will succeed.

I'm constantly amazed by our community and I ask you all one simple question.

We're taking one step back so that we may take two steps forward, will you walk with me?

    This really upsets me, because I liked this website and downloaded a few addons from here. Now I can't find them anywhere anymore. I haven't looked at Cursegaming, because I do not like that site. So if somebody could give me a hint where to find the ace addons, please do so. ;-)

    What made the updater so unique is that it was designed more for developers and less for the end user. It had options that many other update programs did not have and gave access to the most recent add on updates. As more developers recognized the "ACE" framework as the fastest and easiest way to write and update their projects, utilizing WAU became a god/goddess-send. The options it gave are sadly missing from all the other update programs I've found. Even the java based one someone here posted is now missing the vital dependency options. I would develop one myself, but alas, I suck at programming and every time I think I have lua figured out, they change something. So, you people wanna complain? How about we just come up with a solution for a program that will replace wau with something that works better than anything else out there.
    .. and that's my $2.95 but with the economy, probably only worth .01

    Yes I read. And thank you for refraining from making a snarky remark about my comment.

    /sarcasm

    It's too bad that this move was made NOW -- horrid timing. Sadly, curse is no substitute for wow and it's too bad this couldn't have been done either well before the patch or sometime after. Just my $.02, no need to get your panties in a wad about it.

    @marblex,dracoform

    Seriously do you guys read the threads linked above as to the why,whats and how of this move ? I mean seriously you read that the wowace updater is no more and stop reading altogether !!!! Go back read em again. The project is still technically under BETA so this means Kaeleten want's to make it better than it it is

    @lepaperwan

    Don't use wow matrix. It makes addon authors cry :(

    Try this updater http://www.wowmatrix.com/download/ it's free and it works quite well. It also is quite easy to use (not like curse).

    Apart from closing down, going with curse.com was the worst solution IMHO, in addition moving from a well working WAU going to a mediocre curse client wasn't too good. While i really like the idea behin ACE, the distribution is something that should be improved .(

    Well, curse SUX comparatively, does not contain all the updates, does not locate all the updates, does not work with my version of Windows and quite frankly it's a complete PITY that Ace stopped hosting its own files and using its own updater, which was a pleasure.

    I have had two days of sheer hell trying to retrieve working updates from curse, which is horribly disorganized and always overloaded. BOO

    @PalaCro

    Yes the curse updater is ugly right now but it should get better eventually ! And just remember ace ≠ a good addon. Shitty coders make shitty addons. Good coders make good addons. It being "ace" has little to know bearing on it

    Look up your addons. Add a subscription for it so when it does get updated it'll email you :D Super cool !

    @n0com

    Please take a look at the home page . read some of the other threads bout why the change. Greed as little to do with especially since Kaelten's been paying the bandwidth out of his pocket for the last few months. Show some gratitude for the authors who spend a lot of their free time on your favourite addons.

    Shadoweric: well, as i told, i didnt seen any single warning, and im not reading wowace forums. But, owner of this site could stop service for like month, placing similar page with huge red blinking writing: "i dont have money to pay for 1tb/day traffic. Support, or site will be closed" - make sure, i would read that.

    I mean...closing at the day of 3.0.2 release is just wrong.

    Thanks for the super service with WAU still here.

    The only thing you make wrong ... you and the community provide a service that was to good ;).

    If the first smoke will be gone after patch 3.0.2, I beleave that you can bring this excellent service again with the curse client.
