Rest In Peace: files.wowace and WowAceUpdater

As I'm sure many of you have heard or scene today marks the day where these services have been discontinued.

Rest in Peace

Today has marked the day where this page has been officially discontinued in favor of the newer systems that have recently been deployed.

While I know not everyone is happy over the changed we're going through and the current state of them I want everyone to know that what has happened has had to happen. I apologize that we didn't have enough time to get everything 100% right, but we're working as hard as we can across the board to make things right. It however is an uphill fight.

For those who don't know....

A few months ago I posted a long forum post outlining the current state of WowAce and what had to be done to allow the services to continue. I talked to authors and users alike trying to come up with the best solutions possible. And now we're here.

It's been a glorious if bumpy ride. The success we've experienced on this page and the updater have been an amazing accident, and we weren't prepared for it.

A little over a year ago Curse.com started subsidizing our servers, and for a time that was enough to get us through the worst of it. But we just kept growing.

Things reached a critical mass during 2.4. We filled up the entirety of the 1 gigabit connection we where using and ended up pushing out more than 300GB an hour. With more than 500k users downloading updates for every small change things just couldn't keep up financially.

So that leads us to today.

In Closing

We encourage all users who are looking for updates for their addons to head over to Curse.com and look around. If you're looking for Beta and or Alpha releases and are part of our testing community please join us on the new site.

If you're used to using WowAceUpdater or one of the other third party clients that used this page we encourage you to try out the new Curse Client. It's not as polished as we'd like and it will certainly receive a lot more work here in the new future.

The above text appeared this morning on files.wowace.com.

I do this with a heavy heart in many ways, but it has to be done, and not is all lost for there is much to be excited about as well. We have an exciting opportunity to reforge out past mistakes into something amazing. No it will not be pleasant, but yes we will succeed.

I'm constantly amazed by our community and I ask you all one simple question.

We're taking one step back so that we may take two steps forward, will you walk with me?

Looks like I'm out of the add-ons then... and I can't play Wow without my add-ons... so no more Wow for me...
Curse sucks so bad as to make things impossible to use. Add to that that I have had to create 3 accounts there so far now because suddenly my password on the original would not work, and their system never sends me the email with the password reset. So I created as second account, and now the same happened with it...
If they cannot even manage something as simple as account resets, why would we expect them to be able to do the rest?

I'm done until WAU decides to come back or someone comes up with something better... but I'd rather not play than use Curse

BTW Kaelten I'm loving the new site. Once I've done the ground work I can get emails on when my addons update. I can then click the linke to get a change log and decide for myself to update. No more clicking that update button like a monkey on crack for this happy user :D

    @kuroboshi

Did you read the forum threads above in detail ? The current curse client is trash no argument there. THE NEW BETA CLIENT BEING DEVELOPED HOWEVER WILL BE MUCH BETTER ...There did I scream that loud enough for you ?

And having 100 little addon folders updated means nothing if they are all meaningless library updates , minor version bumps and localisation updates. I mean if you don't run wow in chinese mode where would you care that they updated one little tooltip for it ?

    Thanks orion.

I do have to wonder however if the #s these guys are throwing at us means that wowmatrix is skipping version checks to make it seem like it does more.

totally agree, i was using aton's compilation ui and wow ace updater to sort it all out. it was a brilliant masterpiece of software!!

i tried using curse client and to be honest it is a complete joke, i used it twice then un-installed it in complete disgust. i'm now using wow matrix but that is nothing compared to the old wau :(. the old wau used to automatically get dependencies for add-ons and no other updater does this i believe?

also libraries were updated and this is so important, why oh why oh why can't wow ace updater be designed to work with curse, we all loved this updater so so so much and now we're left with an absolutely rubbish updater.

my fantastic ui is completely broken and i just don't know what I'll do at the moment

I have been trying curse.com's installer, and it really is as bad as people say it is. In fact, I would go so far as to say the negative comments on wowace here don't do justice to just how cruddy the curse installer really is. Each day with a "premium" account it will start up to check for new versions. It either finds none, or finds some but does not find them all, and often just reinstalls the same version rather than the new one. The startup to automatically check is the check I am referring to. It has downloaded less than 10 updates for me since I started using it Tuesday.

The check for updates button has not once actually done _anything_ when I click it other than to give me that loading window to say it is checking for updates. That window fills with blue dots, and fades when they reach the end. The the tracking window dissappears and the program does absolutley nothing. No error messages or other messages of any kind are generated. It just does its scan and nothing else. To date, it has not found a single update via that button. I mean that litterally. Not once all week has that button actually downloaded even one file. It is rather a kick in the teeth to be told that we will have to pay to use the automatic update features (yes, I know, manual is still free) when the autoupdate doesn't even work!?! I have had to go to the curse.com site, manually list, and check, every addon and then, when I find one has been updated, I have to go highlight it in the client, and then tell it to upgrade. It always grabs and installs a version, but often it is the same one I had, not the new one. I pretty much have to load the page for each addon individually and use the install from curse client on that page. It is the only method that always gives me the latest version.

I am happy to hear that they helped this site out. Wowace has been the best site with the most useful, lightweight, uploader that I have found. Curse may have great people and great developers, I don't know. Its installer and website code leave much to be desired. When it updated my cartographer, it broke it completely, and I had to manually download and reinstall it.

I understand that wowmatrix may make the developers cry, but Curse's craptacular updater really does not work and makes me the user want to cry. It feels like it is still in the alpha phase of development and not yet ready for public use or beta testing.

As an example with real numbers, this morning the update check on program start found and updated 4 addons. I grabbed wowmatrix to test it. Its "update all" button has found and updated a little over 100 of my addons. Which would you use?

I don't have time to scan through more than 100 addons' information and check versions to find updates. Hopefully the continuation of the developer group here will pressure them into fixing their updater. Until they release something worth using though, I will use an updater that does what I need it to do. It is hard to blame WAU users for being upset that the updater that worked since the day they installed it is taken away, and then being told to use a far inferior product.

Best of luck to you, but it's going to need a heck of a lot of work.

    1) Curse is almost incomplete.

    2) versions on Curse are almost out-of-date.

    3) As Curse want to be running as you start your WOW client, nobody knows if the curse client is collecting (or not) your account password and/or other sensitive informations.

    4) etc ...

I've installed instead Wowmatrix : with only one click all my addon are now working fine and solve all the issues created by using the curse update.

I uninstalled curse client with disgust after trying it for a day.

What Pfooti said. WAU was used so much because it was so well done. Curse's thing installs old and broken versions of mods... The curse thing blows. I understand Wowace is dead... but why can't WAU be fixed to work with curse?
