686 - Add predicted absorbs

I was wondering if you would be able and willing to incorporate the absorb information from predictive healing into Grid's own healing bar, much like the Blizzard raid frames do since patch 5.2.

    Added a basic status module for absorbs in 5.2.0.1591-beta or later. It is very similar to the incoming heals module, including a percentage-based minimum value setting. Please test, and report any errors/issues in a new ticket. Thanks!

    I also play an enhancement shaman, and there's no way I would want 10-25 additional bars cluttering up my Grid. It's just too much information to process for too little value.

    Anyway, I'll add a status plugin, but I'll personally use it the same way I already use the individual PW:S and other aura status, as a simple binary "does this unit have a shield on them" status. If you want it on a bar, you're on your own with finding a plugin to add a third bar indicator.

    I'm of the same sentiment as sampo23, with regards to the potential usefulness of this information. Generally that information would be used by myself as enhancement on whether to spend maelstrom charges on a potentially lifesaving heal on a raid member, or to use them for my personal dps, which is a situation that occurs from time to time on progression content.

    I did not know if it was possible to create an indicator plugin that could display the information visually. Thank you for your reply.

    Plugins can add indicators, though it's more hacky than adding statuses since there isn't a real API for adding indicators; see the list of indicator plugins for some examples.

    I think i would have agreed with you if this were still Wrath, but now that absorbs can be so much larger than ever before (i can stack up almost 400k of absorbs on someone) and can be applied to so many more targets (PW:Shield, Divine Aegis, Spirit shell, pally mastery) i think the visual information has become much more useful.

    In your example, if the tank is at 10% and another healer can see that there is a 200k absorb shield...it may mean the difference between letting that greater heal finish, or canceling it so you can use a major lifesaver cool down instead...

    I guess we can agree to disagree about whether this belongs in the core tools, but i would simply argue that a shield IS health and it belongs on the health bar in a visual way. Blizzards implementation of this is visually tasteful AND we are starting to find it extremely useful as we are doing progression content and every single optimization to all healing must be made when possible.

    That all being said, if you are dead-set against adding an overlay bar...is that something an add-on can add? Or is it not possible for addons to add overlay bars on their own?

    That's still the same argument though. The Grid core should not include a feature that's only useful for disc priests, when there are 34 total specs in the game and the feature is of little to no use for the rest of them; that's why there was a plugin API from the beginning.

    It's also outside the scope of a raid frame addon to track your personal self-shields as a tank.

    As for the other argument, I healed as a shaman in high-level raids from vanilla through Wrath, and I never once cared how much shielding was on anyone. A simple "this person has a shield" indicator in the corner is plenty. If your tank is suddenly at 10% health, you still need to heal them, even if they have shields for the next 100,000,000 incoming damage.

    I realize other players have different playstyles and opinions, but I just don't see how seeing 40 more bars in your UI is helpful. The focus of Grid is on removing non-essential information and visual clutter. That's why it doesn't have mana bars, even though those are a feature of the baseline UI.

    Additionally, there is the problem of how to display this information in Grid. There is already an overlay bar intended for incoming heals, and I have no interest in adding a second overlay bar like the default UI. I'm willing to add an absorbs status, but you guys are on your own for figuring out how to display it meaningfully.

    I would like to second this request on behalf of myself and other healers/grid users i play with. Here are a few quick arguments that this feature is useful to healers across the board and not just for disc priests: 1) Obviously, disc priests will benefit the most from this information since they are most familiar with absorption mechanics and have the largest amount of their healing based on absorbs. 2) Any healer working in conjunction with a disc priest for any sort of intensive healing situation will benefit greatly in decision making ability knowing which low-health players currently have large absorbs in place versus those that are truly low health and about to die. 3) Some tank specs use absorb mechanics extensively as part of their mitigation strategies and this information is useful to healers and other tanks 4) Paladins also use absorbs as part of their mastery mechanics. 5) Blizzard adding this as a baseline feature indicates the importance of this visual data from their perspective. With it being in the core UI, everyone will expect that it is a core feature of addons meant to take over.

    For now I'm not adding this to the core, but it's still on the table. Can you explain how this information would be useful to you?

    It's not useful for any class I play (resto/shaman, feral/guardian druid, prot paladin, warlock, mistweaver monk) and the only specific arguments I've heard in its favor are for disc/holy priests, in which case it belongs in a plugin, not the core, since the core shouldn't include an entire module that's useful only for 2 of the 34 possible specs in the game.

    But, if someone can come up with something I haven't thought of, I'm willing to consider it.
