Grid

665 - Status "unit name": flag players from other realms

The original interface marks players from different realms with a "*" at the end of their names, would it be possible to include something like this into grid's unit name status? I know it might be possible to just use a module to add another status for this (although I could not find any module that adds this specific functionality), but I'd actually prefer it if this flag was added directly to the players' names.

You can just mouse over each player to check their server; it takes 2 seconds.

As for performance, you'd be surprised. Currently the code basically goes "get the name, trim it to N characters, and show it", where N is your center text length. Adding a server name display would require changing to go "if we don't want to see the server indicator, get the name, trim it to N characters, and show it; otherwise, get the name and server; if the server is the same as the player's server, trim the name to N characters, and show it; otherwise, trim the name to N-1 characters, append an asterisk, and show it". That's a huge increase in complexity just to show something that doesn't affect gameplay at all. The absolute CPU time required may be very small, but if you look at it in relative terms, it's several times over as much CPU time as just showing the name. :)

Yeah, I already expected your reply to be something like this, but I thought I'd just try my luck anyway :).

I can't really come up with any situation where this would be useful in combat, either, it's just something I'd like to be able to see at one glance when joining a LFD or LFR group. I sometimes find new people to run dungeons or even raids with in PUGs, so I think it's nice to know from the start which player is from your server without having to mouseover everyone. But, as already stated, this could also be done with another plugin.

I just thought that something like this is would be a really tiny change that wouldn't even affect performance in any noticeable way, and if you don't want to waste screen space with this, you might be able to just turn it off. Also, I thought that including this to the unit names would make more sense than seperating player names and servers.

Anyhow, thanks for taking the time to answer this.

How is that information relevant to gameplay? If someone in your group has aggro or needs a heal, why does it matter whether their character was created on the same server as yours or not?

I can't think of a single reason to spend screen space showing this, so unless you have a really compelling argument that convinces me otherwise, you're going to have to write a plugin for this, or find someone else to write one for you, sorry.
