Boss Notes

13 - Associating dungeon mobs with 'General'

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Go into an instance (behaviour witnessed in at least HoS and Naxx)
2. Play some
3. Activate /bn learn

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
BossNotes should start learning NPCs of the dungeon and associate them with that dungeon (or so I'd expect). Quite often, though, I see BossNotes associating a creature that only inhabits that dungeon with the category 'General', which I take to be outside any instance.

What version of the product are you using?
1.1.1

Do you have an error log of what happened?
-

Please provide any additional information below.
Either BossNotes should associate correctly or, if it's doing so, it should be more clear that the described situation is correct. For example, if it would be 'General' as in, 'General for this dungeon, i.e. not a boss-fight', have it print e.g. 'Nexus (General)'; this would alleviate any confusion with regard to outside dungeons, where mobs are recorded to 'General'.

    Updated learning mode description.

Enabling the learning mode is only required if the encounter database is still incomplete for a dungeon. In this case, you will need to select the dungeon and encounter (the category) yourself as you progress through the dungeon. The only thing the learning mode then does is associating NPC IDs with categories. This is why the category where the NPCs are associated with must be selected manually: The learning mode is the tool I use myself in order to populate the encounter database so that the next release of Boss Notes can switch the category automatically as soon as an NPC is mouseovered.

Note that the learning is especially not required in order for Boss Notes to pick up spells and abilities and emotes. This happens regardless of the learning mode.

So, learning is a two-step process:

    1. NPCs are associated with categories. This is what the learning mode is for. This is normally already done by me, with the first 1-2 days of a new dungeon raid (plus some classic instances) being the noteable exceptions.
    2. Learning spells, abilities and emotes. This happens indepdently of the learning mode.

The documentation and tooltips are unclear on this and I will keep this ticket open with the goal of clarifying these aspects.
