12 - Gardiant Backgrounds

Description

I am wondering if you can add in the feature of gardiant backgrounds (something like kgPanels implements) as this would allow more customability to match kgPanel type looks/feel for making your UI have the same feel without having to create additional panels to accomplish this.

Yes, adding a gradient like that works fine as long as you don't try to do any animations on the bar (or resize it, for that matter), which b0rks it. At least that was the case last time I checked... I'll take a look at it again, and maybe even add the option even if the animations break it so that folks that don't want fading bars can use it.

These should both work fine to add a gradient fill to the bar background without any animations (???):

Texture:SetGradient("orientation", minR, minG, minB, maxR, maxG, maxB)
Texture:SetGradientAlpha("orientation", minR, minG, minB, minA, maxR, maxG, maxB, maxA)

    Hello,

I've looked into this, but unfortunately several things are broken/incomplete in the wow api which make this kinda hard to implement: 1) the AlphaAnimation thing is mostly broken 2) setting alpha on a frame doesn't correctly set the alpha value of icons embedded in fontstrings (the result is that stuff like MoneyBroker don't work as expected, as the gold/silver/copper icons do not fade when the rest of the bar does) 3) frame's SetBackdrop() doesn't handle gradients, and it's not enough to apply the gradient once on the texture created by SetBackdrop(), it'll get overwritten whenever you call SetAlpha() on it or resize the frame.

I'll check after cata if any of these are fixed. If 2) is fixed, I can get rid of most of the hacks in the code to fix it and it might make it a bit easier to implement the gradient thing, although I still need a way to notice when the backdrop texture is "reset" by the engine so that I can re-apply the gradient.

Another option would be to drop the border setting and set the background texture manually, but I'm not sure its worth it to gain gradients.

    cheers, mitch
